Want to teach bridge through OLLI?

OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) provides a way for people who have something to teach to connect with people who want to learn.

Classes run for eight weeks, and there are three sets of classes a year. Classes are held in one of the six OLLI locations around Denver.

Support for OLLI classes from the ACBL includes materials and a small stipend.

For more information about OLLI, go to http://universitycollege.du.edu/olli/. For more information about the ACBL support, go tobhttp://www.acbl.org/teach/life-long-learning/.

Denver Area Bridge, Unit 361 of the ACBL

Welcome to the Denver Unit web site!

Message from Margaret Devere, Unit 361 President:

It's June 11 as I write this. I have a bit of belated info from the March sectional, and reports from the spring I/N sectional and the regional.

The financial report from the March sectional came in, and we made a profit of ~$2000 on 422 tables. Note that our goal is essentially to break even, so if we continue to make a profit, we will look for ways to give the money back to the players. It's too early to know if this is a trend, however.

The I/N sectional was successful, with 21 teams on Saturday, 49 pairs on Sunday morning, and 32 pairs on Sunday afternoon. The tournament broke even.

Now to the regional. Attendance was down: 1722 tables, down from about 1920 in 2016 and 2161 in 2015. This is a nation-wide trend, so it's not a surprise but it's not good news either. The financial report isn't final yet, but the preliminary report suggests that we will make a small profit. This is important because the unit relies on the regional to cover a lot of its expenses. (The budget is available for anybody to review -- just ask.) On the bright side, though, the hotel provided an excellent lunch option, the hospitality coupons were well-received, and we heard mostly favorable comments about the revised schedule.

Looking ahead: We have the July sectional coming up on July 7, 8, and 9. Get the flyer here. Swiss teams on Friday night! We will again have a Help Desk between sessions on Friday and Saturday, and offer $2 coupons for the fall I/N tournament. See you there!

Longest Day Bridge Events

The Castle Rock Bridge Club is holding two Longest Day sessions on June 21.  The games will be at 9:00 and 1:30 at the Plum Creek Golf Club, 331 Players Club Drive, in Castle Rock.  We’ll be playing in the clubhouse.

Entry fees will be $10 per person, and all proceeds over actual expenses will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.   The Golf Club is offering us 15% off on food from the grill that day, too.

Contrary to popular belief, Castle Rock really isn’t north Pueblo.  Exit 181 East from I25 to Plum Creek Boulevard South.

Questions? Call  Rick Way at 303 805-5884.

Thanks.and hope to see you there!

The 2016-2017 Directory has been published and some extra copies have been left at or sent to most of the clubs in the unit. If you want a unit member and want a digital version contact Tom West @ tpwestjr@gmail.com.

We are hoping to get the directory on line for unit members but aren't there yet.
